Loving The God of Truth

Welcome to all those in the ODM who desire to know and to love the God of Truth through the faithful study of His Word. Please feel free to share your comments, insights, questions, concerns, words of encouragement, thanksgiving, praise, and prayer requests with all of us.

May God most richly bless the reading of His precious Word to our hearts this year.

"The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous.
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
They are sweeter than honey from the comb.
By them is your servant warned;

In keeping them there is great reward."

(Psalm 19:7-11)

Jesus' humble beginning

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:5-7

King Jesus was born in such a humble setting. It reminds me of the previous chapter, Mary's Magnificat "...he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty." Christmas is so commercial - everything is bright and dazzling, expensive gifts and all, that we really miss seeing the desolate and poor condition in which Jesus was born. There was absolutely nothing glamorous about this birth yet God chose this as the setting to bring His beloved son into this world.

Let us celebrate the humble birth of Jesus this Christmas, and really rejoice in Jesus' humility that enabled God to display his amazing plan of redemption.

Merry Christmas ladies! Happy New Year 2011!

thanks esther for a beautiful and moving reflection. if we only thought a little more of how humbly and in what poor circumstances God's own Son entered the world, we would be hard put to think so highly of ourselves as we often do. let us think of our Savior often this christmas season.

Esther, thank you for sharing your reflection with us. As I read your comment "Christmas is so commercial - everything is bright and dazzling, expensive gifts and all, that we really miss seeing the desolate and poor condition in which Jesus was born." I wondered: what it is about the desolate and the poor that is so despicable. The hungry, the homeless, the desolate and the poor are all around us but I do find myself wanting to turn away from them. The salvation army bells ringing in front of the stores, the letters I get in the mail and my email box asking for donations remind me that they are those out there in need but I have a hard time opening my heart to pour out an ounce of compassion. The needy are with us 365/24/7 yet on this "holiday season" people are in a frenzy to splurge on whatever. I guess to remember the desolate and the poor would be one too many burden on top of all the holiday frenzy. Yet our Christ was one of the least of these as He entered this world...

Thank you Esther!

It amazes me about Jesus' humble birth. I was actually thinking about this earlier. Jesus could have been born in a grand palace surrounded by flocks of people and servants waiting to worship and tend to his every need like a worldly king, but instead, he came in the most lowly and the most modest way possible. But in a strange way, it was perfect.
